Safer Healthcare Now! Resources
The Safer Healthcare Now! campaign is the largest patient safety initiative in Canada and is nationally supported by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI). The campaign was launched in April 2005.
Mirrored after the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 100,000 Lives campaign in the U.S., Safer Healthcare Now! (SHN) is an ambitious pan-Canadian patient safety campaign to implement six targeted interventions in health care organizations that have been proven to prevent avoidable adverse events.
The ten interventions are:
- AMI - Improved care for Acute Myocardial Infarction
- ARO/MRSA - Antibiotic Resistant Organisms (ARO)/Methicillin-resistant Staphyloccus Aureus (MRSA)
- CLI - Prevention of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection
- Falls - National collaborative on falls in long term care
- MedRec: Medication Reconciliation (Acute Care)
- MedRec: Medication Reconciliation (LTC)
- RRT - Rapid Response Teams: Prevent deaths in patients who are progressively failing outside the ICU by implementing rapid response teams.
- SSI - Prevention of Surgical Site Infection
- VAP - Prevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia
- VTE - Veneous Thromboembolism
The Ontario Node of the SHN campaign is supported by the Quality Healthcare Network (QHN). The Ontario Node has seen significant and ongoing growth in the number of facilities enrolled since the campaign's inception. As of January 2010 there are 328 healthcare organizations that have enrolled in Canada and 161 in Ontario.
