SHN ONTARIO NODE E-UPDATE - April, 2008

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Exciting News! Safer Healthcare Now! is expanding

To date, over 830 teams, representing more than 220 hospitals, health regions and other healthcare delivery organizations like yourself are currently implementing one or more of six targeted leading practice interventions to improve patient safety.

Interim results show that the implementation of the six healthcare interventions, the pillars of the campaign, can reduce injuries or deaths related to preventable adverse events. The initial six acute-care interventions will continue.

Earlier this month, four new interventions to improve patient safety were launched at a national conference in Winnipeg, to kick start Phase II of the Safer Healthcare Now! campaign. Presentations from the national conference are now available at www.saferhealthcarenow.ca. From the home page, click on "National Learning Series V Presentations" on the right side of your screen.

The four new interventions include:

  • VTE: Preventing venous thromboembolism
  • MRSA: Preventing harm from antibiotic-resistant organisms
  • Medication Reconciliation in Long Term Care
  • Prevention of Falls in Long Term Care

To join one of the four new Phase II interventions, you will need to update your organization's enrollment in the campaign, Visit www.saferhealthcarenow.ca, click on "Sign Up". If you are currently enrolled in Phase I of the campaign, go to "Current Enrollees" and click "Login". You will be required to key in your email address and password. About the Quality Healthcare Network:

The Quality Healthcare Network (QHN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the development and adoption of best practices by its members through education and shared improvement projects. Established in 1992 as the CQI Network, the network grew into the  Quality Healthcare Network in 2003, a member-based organization, which now exceeds over 70 healthcare organizations that share the courage to move beyond status quo, inspired towards excellence in care and service. In 2005, the network became the Ontario lead of the Safer Healthcare Now! campaign, an ambitious pan-Canadian effort aimed at reducing the number of injuries and deaths related to adverse events, such as infections and medication incidents.
