Data Sanity: Taming the Data Beast through Statistical Thinking
May 27, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. The CNIB Centre | Toronto, ON
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

Forget everything you’ve learned in your previous “sadistics” courses (No doubt, you already have!). Data Sanity will introduce a “mind set,” not a “tool set” – an everyday organizational language to understand the many guises of variation and react appropriately.

This course will demonstrate several common statistical traps and how many common data displays create significant waste of precious time and energy. A few elegantly simple—and counterintuitive—alternatives will be presented that can create deeper, more productive conversations about data issues…and be the surprising catalyst for true organizational excellence.
This course will be offered on Nov. 16, 2011 in Ottawa - to register click here.

Taking a Call on Quality Series: Measuring Patient Safety Climate Using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire
June 6, 2011 / 12p.m. to 1p.m.via WebEx
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

Recent media attention to laboratory science matters has opened the door for medical laboratory professionals to critically reflect on their patient safety role. The Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) included in their 2009-2014 strategic plan: “to serve as champions for patient safety by embracing a culture that puts patient safety at the centre of professional practice”. However, they must first evaluate the patient safety culture of the Canadian medical laboratory profession to help define the key patient safety issues in the laboratory.

The CSMLS project aimed to evaluate/examine patient safety attitudes amongst members of the Canadian medical laboratory profession. The assessment of patient safety climate was done using a modified version of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) adapted for the laboratory setting. The SAQ is an easily adapted, cost effective tool to assess basic understanding of safety-related perceptions and attitudes within a framework of systems and contextual factors. The SAQ elicits frontline healthcare personnel’s perceptions of safety climate over six safety domains: teamwork climate, safety climate, stress recognition, perceptions of management, working conditions and job satisfaction. In addition to establishing benchmark data for a clinical area or profession, the collected date from the survey can be further analyzed by demographic variables to facilitate a more in-depth evaluation of patient safety attitudes. The SAQ can be used multiple times to measure changes in attitudes after initiatives to improve patient safety climate have been implemented.
